Emergency generator at iron foundry is an insurance policy in more uncertain times

More unstable power supplies and the risk of power outages, sabotage and hacker attacks on critical infrastructure such as the electricity supply and general power consumption have only increased in recent years, prompting the iron foundry TASSO to invest in an emergency generator. This way, in the event of a power failure, the iron foundry can ensure a controlled shutdown of the melting furnaces, which contain liquid iron at over 1,400 degrees and run virtually around the clock.

An insurance policy that will hopefully never be needed. This is how to describe a new emergency generator that has just been installed at the iron foundry TASSO, located in the center of Odense, Denmark. TASSO is the first foundry in Denmark to invest in an emergency generator that can maintain the power supply for the entire factory, including power for controlled shutdown of the foundry's four melting furnaces if power is lost for a shorter or longer period.

- In recent years, we have continuously reassessed our risk assessment, as there are many factors that can lead to a grid collapse. The threat landscape has changed, and the risk of both short-term interruptions and major outages has certainly not diminished. Quite the opposite. It is therefore crucial that we can shut down production in our iron foundry in a controlled manner, for example by cooling down our melting facilities and ensuring that the iron does not solidify in our melting furnaces, explains Bjarne Faurbye, Technical Director at TASSO.

As an iron foundry, TASSO handles many tons of scrap iron that is remelted into new cast iron bars at temperatures above 1,400 degrees. A sudden power failure could mean that the continuous cooling of the furnaces is not maintained, and there is therefore a risk of breakdown of the melting furnaces, resulting in a prolonged production stop.

- We must avoid being without power at our factory at all costs, which is why the right thing to do is to ensure the maintenance of our own power supply that works independently of the public power supply. With the emergency generator, we can secure power for cooling systems, cranes, pumps, melting furnaces and hydraulic systems, so we can shut down production in a controlled and safe manner. This way we protect our employees, production equipment and buildings, says Bjarne Faurbye.

The emergency generator at TASSO is the size of a 40 ft container and weighs 29 tons.
